Short Term Independent Studies (STIS)
General Guidelines
- Principal approved absence (family emergency, vacation or other justifiable personal reason)
- Extenuating circumstances (?) due to COVID related mandatory quarantine
- Students can use STIS for a maximum of 15 days per school year
- Requests for STIS must be made at least one (1) week prior to the requested date the student will be off. All other requests will be denied.
- STIS is a program used to support student attendance and does not mean a student will maintain their academic grade in a class nor that their assignments are excused.
Criteria for STIS
- Previous STIS Outcomes
- Has the student previously participated in STIS?
- Was the student successful in STIS before?
- If there was no measurable success from previous interventions, STIS will be denied.
- Attendance – Chronic Absenteeism
- If the student is chronically absent and there is no consistent attendance improvement plan or progress, STIS will be denied.
- STIS is not effective if the student is not present to benefit from the support.
- Academic Performance – Failing or Deficient Grades
- If the student has failing grades but no evidence of effort, engagement, or support plans in place, STIS will be denied.
- Readiness to Engage – Work Completion and Motivation
- If the student is not demonstrating a willingness or ability to complete assigned work and no structures are in place to address this, STIS will be denied.
- The Parent must ensure there is a clear plan for monitoring work completion and that the student has support to stay accountable (i.e. space to work, WiFi access), otherwise STIS will be denied.
Process
STEP 1: Parent/Guardian makes a request with the attendance office at least one (1) week from the expected date of starting STIS.
STEP 2: Documents are completed by the attendance office and a meeting with the administrator is scheduled.
STEP 3: Meeting is held between the parents/guardian, student, and administrator to go over all of the forms and expectations.
STEP 4: Student completes the assignments daily to count as attendance for each class.
STEP 5: Upon return, the Attendance Office will verify the work that was completed and adjust the attendance accordingly.
