Pomona High School Senior Prepares to Serve His Country Through the U.S. Navy

For senior Moises Lua (pronounced “Moi-Ses”), leadership, determination, and service have defined his journey throughout high school. On May 29, 2026, Moises will graduate from Pomona High School before beginning his next chapter with the United States Navy, where he has earned more than $210,000 in support and opportunities through his enlistment.

Moises is scheduled to leave for boot camp on June 30, 2026, and hopes to one day become an aviation rescue swimmer — a career path that combines his love for the water with his passion for helping others.

“I’ve always admired what Navy SEALs do,” Moises shared. “I’m ready to risk my life to help save others.”

During his time at Pomona High School, Moises made a lasting impact both on and off the field. He served as captain of the football team, competed in track and field, and played basketball, earning recognition as a standout athlete and respected leader among his peers. Beyond athletics, he also dedicated three years to serving as a peer counselor, where he supported and encouraged fellow students across campus.

Two staff members who played especially meaningful roles in his journey were Peer Counselor Sheila Balk and School Counselor Ja-Shun Tolbert, both of whom consistently mentored and supported him throughout his high school experience.

Moises shared that one of the things he values most about Pomona High School and PUSD is the strong sense of family and community.

“I truly thank PUSD and Pomona High School staff for always making it feel like a family,” he said.

Known by classmates and friends as kind, funny, and outgoing, Moises was honored and surprised when Principal Dr. Cindy Green selected him for a Senior Spotlight feature. He described feeling humbled and excited, with a smile that reflected his gratitude and pride.

As the youngest of 4 brothers, Moises says his family and hometown have helped shape the person he is today. Proud to represent the city of Pomona, he is ready to embrace whatever challenges and opportunities lie ahead as he begins his journey in the Navy.

Although his college major is still undecided, Moises plans to take online college courses after completing boot camp while continuing to explore his future educational and career goals.

With his courage, leadership, and dedication to service, Moises Lua leaves behind a legacy of positivity and school pride at Pomona High School. The entire PUSD community wishes him continued success as he begins this exciting new chapter serving the country through the United States Navy.

Congratulations, Mr. Lua — we cannot wait to see where your next chapter takes you.
